Furnace repair · Airway Heights, West Plains
Airway Heights furnace repair for a furnace idle since April
Most furnaces here are young gas units backing up a heat pump, unused from spring to fall. When the first West Plains frost asks them to light and they refuse, we are twelve minutes out US-2 with the parts.
- Drive time
- Twelve minutes out US-2, often the first stop of our day.
- Housing
- Subdivisions built roughly 2010 to 2020, furnaces in garages or closets.
- Common call
- A furnace that sat all summer and will not light in October.

Frost reaches the West Plains in October, usually a little ahead of the city, and that is the week Airway Heights furnaces get tested. Most of them spent the summer idle while the heat pump did the work. The first cold night asks them to fire for the first time since spring, and a flame sensor dusted over in a garage, or an igniter that cracked quietly in July, answers with three clicks and a lockout. The wind that crosses the plains on those nights finds every weak spot, from a garage door left open to a condensate line run along an outside wall.
We repair gas furnaces, electric furnaces and the strip heat behind local heat pumps, with same-day windows for no-heat calls Monday through Saturday. The technician walks the firing sequence with a meter, reads the flue with a combustion analyzer, and writes one price that has the $99 diagnostic built in. Every gas job finishes with a leak check and a combustion reading recorded on the invoice, which landlords and property managers can file with the unit’s records. If a part has to be ordered, we tell you how to run the heat pump or strips in the meantime, and the return visit carries no second trip fee.
Airway Heights furnace trouble and the usual cause
| What you notice | What it usually is | What we do |
|---|---|---|
| First cold night: clicks, glows, no flame | Igniter that cracked over the summer, or a dusty flame sensor | Igniter or sensor replaced; gas valve tested with a meter |
| Lights, runs about ten seconds on a windy night | Condensate line along the garage wall iced over | Drain thawed and rerouted; pressure switch retested |
| Burners on and off in short bursts all evening | Furnace a size too big for a tight new house, or a dirty filter | Filter and limit switch checked; plain advice on the oversizing |
| Blower runs, warm air never arrives | Igniter failing mid-cycle, or a tripped limit | Part replaced; exchanger inspected if the readings call for it |
| All-electric house, heat pump on, vents cool | Strip heat element open or a sequencer not closing | Elements and sequencer metered and replaced |
| Code blinking on the board | Stored fault pointing to one of the above | Code read, fault proven with a meter, then repaired |
Young, garage-mounted and often oversized: Airway Heights furnaces
The furnaces we see in Airway Heights were mostly installed between about 2010 and 2020 in the subdivisions north and south of US-2: Deer Heights, the streets off Hayford Road and Lawson Street, and the blocks running toward Craig Road. They sit in garages or upstairs closets rather than basements, and many were sized in a hurry, often one size larger than a tight new house needs. An oversized furnace heats in short bursts, which piles up ignition cycles and wears the igniter and limit switch faster than the furnace’s age would suggest. Builder-grade installs here often pair it with thin-walled ductwork, so the blower pushes more air than the ducts carry comfortably and rooms swing between warm and cool.
The garage location brings a problem Spokane basements rarely have. A high-efficiency furnace makes water, and a condensate line running along a garage wall in a Fairchild rental, with the big door left up on a windy 10°F night, can ice solid. The furnace lights, the pressure switch senses the blocked drain, and the burners shut down after roughly ten seconds, which the tenant reports as a furnace that keeps quitting. The repair is small, but finding it means looking at the drain before blaming the board. One Deer Heights call had exactly that, plus a filter nobody had changed since move-in, and the family had heat back before the school bus returned.
Because most of these furnaces are so young, cracked heat exchangers are uncommon here; igniters, flame sensors and drains make up most of the work. Our technicians hold EPA 608 Universal certification, which covers the heat pump half of the system on the night it turns out to be the part that quit. On these paired systems we also look at the outdoor temperature where the thermostat hands the load to the furnace. Set too low, it leaves the heat pump straining through the coldest nights, and a furnace that has stopped working can go unnoticed until the power bill arrives.

What Airway Heights furnace repairs usually run
On these newer West Plains furnaces, a flame sensor cleaning or replacement starts at $100, a frozen condensate line thawed and rerouted or heat-traced starts at $150, and an electric heat strip or element begins at $200. Those starting prices around Spokane are offered for planning; none of them is a quote. Your own figure arrives in writing after the diagnostic, with the $99 included, and a repair booked online costs up to $50 less.

Questions we hear
Why won’t my furnace light on the first cold night of fall?
It has probably been idle since April. Over a summer in a garage or closet the flame sensor collects dust and oxide, and an igniter can develop a hairline crack that only matters once it is asked to glow again. The result is clicks, a brief glow or flame, and a lockout. Both parts ride on the van, and we test the gas valve while the cover is off.
Our garage furnace runs ten seconds and shuts off on windy nights. What is it?
Very often a condensate line that has iced up along the garage wall. The furnace lights, the pressure switch reads the blocked drain, and the board shuts the gas off. We thaw the line, move or insulate it, and add heat trace if the route cannot change. If the drain turns out to be clear, the same visit checks the flame sensor and pressure switch.
The builder’s furnace seems too big for our house. Can you help without replacing it?
Often you can live with it comfortably. We confirm the filter is clean, test the limit switch and blower, and look at thermostat settings that can soften short cycling. We tell you plainly whether the oversizing is shortening the furnace’s life. If replacement ever makes sense, the install site visit and written quote cost nothing, but most young furnaces here just need the repair.
I manage rentals in Airway Heights. What paperwork do I get?
A written quote before work, then an invoice listing the fault, the part, a leak check and the combustion reading on gas furnaces, along with a written warranty. The tenant gets a texted arrival window, and we can bill the owner or manager directly. No-heat calls in rentals get same-day windows exactly as owner-occupied homes do.
Do you service electric furnaces and heat strips in all-electric houses here?
Yes. Sequencers, heating elements, relays and blower motors are all ours to repair, and the circuits feeding them are tested on the same visit. If the strips are carrying the house because the heat pump has stopped, our EPA 608 Universal certification lets the same technician repair the outdoor side as well.
