Mini-splits · Airway Heights
Airway Heights mini-splits, placed with the wind in mind
Bonus rooms over the garage, detached shops, RV garages and backyard ADUs all end up needing heat and cooling of their own. Our crew sets cold-climate ductless units sited for the West Plains wind, and we repair the ones that were not.
- Short run west
- About twelve minutes from our shop for repairs and installs.
- Wind-aware siting
- Outdoor unit set out of the worst gusts and above drifting snow.
- One-crew installs
- Line set and refrigerant handled by the same people.

The two-story floor plans common in Deer Heights and on the Lawson Street side of US-2 nearly all have a bonus room over the garage, and nearly none have enough duct running to it. The central system was sized for the whole house and cannot push air up and across to a room with three exterior walls and a west-facing afternoon sun load, so that room sits at 85°F every July while the rest of the house is comfortable. A single-zone mini-split takes care of it without touching the main system at all.
The same lots come with detached shops, RV garages and, more and more often, a backyard ADU for a relative or a Fairchild tenant. None of those spaces should run on a space heater, and none justify trenching ductwork across a yard. RV garages are a special case: tall doors and thin insulation mean most of the heat leaves through the door, and we will tell you when an insulated door would do more than a bigger head. A cold-climate ductless unit on its own circuit heats them through winter and cools them through summer. When an existing unit stops doing either, our technician puts gauges on the refrigerant side and a meter on the electronics, then writes one number for the repair.
Mini-split work around Airway Heights
| What you notice | What it usually is | What we do |
|---|---|---|
| Bonus room over the garage near 85°F by late afternoon | Central system can't balance two floors and a sunbaked west wall | One low-temperature-rated head with a circuit of its own |
| RV garage or shop with cold tools and tripped breakers | Space heaters running on extension cords | Cold-climate unit on a dedicated circuit listed on the quote |
| Unit blows warm air in cooling mode | Charge lost through a flare leak, a dirty coil or a board fault | Leak repaired and recharged, coil cleaned, board tested and replaced |
| Outdoor unit iced solid on a windy January night | Defrost fault, low charge, or a standard model never rated for this cold | Defrost repaired, charge corrected, plain advice if the class is wrong |
| Head dripping onto the carpet | Condensate line blocked, or a lift pump that quit | Drain flushed, slope restored, pump swapped |
| Weak airflow after five summers | Dust caked on the blower wheel and coil | Wheel and coil pulled and washed |
Wind, open lots and cold-climate equipment on the West Plains
Ordinary mini-splits lose much of their output on most January nights out here, and on an open lot by the airport the wind strips heat from the outdoor coil faster still. Anywhere a mini-split has to carry the heating alone, we install only cold-climate lines with published capacity down to −13°F. At the site visit we pick the outdoor unit's spot with the wind in mind, on a stand above drifting snow and clear of the roof drip line, and choose the head location for how the room is actually used, whether that is a workbench, a TV wall or a bed.
Installation follows the same sequence every time. Flares are cut with a calibrated tool and torqued to spec; nitrogen pressure proves every joint; a deep vacuum is pulled and watched until it stops rising; only then is the charge set to the nameplate. Condensate is pitched to drain, or a lift pump is fitted where gravity cannot do the job. The dedicated circuit and disconnect are listed on the written quote, and we file the permit with whichever jurisdiction, city or county, covers your lot.
For repairs, the diagnostic reads charge, superheat, coil condition, inverter board voltages, sensor values and the code history stored in the remote. Flare leaks are the usual culprit on heads hung without torque-checked connections, and our EPA 608 Universal card holders repair and recharge them on the same visit. We work on Daikin, Mitsubishi, LG, Fujitsu, MrCool, Pioneer and Gree, including units bought online, and we tell you up front if a bargain import has no parts channel in this country. Parts that need ordering come out on a second visit with no trip charge attached.

Questions we hear
Will a mini-split heat a bonus room or shop through an Airway Heights winter?
Yes, as long as the unit comes from a cold-climate line; on the West Plains nothing else belongs on a primary-heat job. Standard units lose output in the low 20s, and the wind makes it worse. We size for the room and its exposure, and if the space needs more than one head to stay even, the quote says so and shows why.
What does the install quote include?
Everything the install takes, line by line: the unit, the line set, the dedicated circuit and the disconnect at the outdoor unit, and the permit. The install is permitted and inspected, and you see each piece before you sign.
Can one outdoor unit heat the shop and cool the bonus room at the same time?
Usually not. A typical multi-zone condenser picks one mode for every head it serves, so one head cannot heat while another cools. If the shop and the bonus room want different things in spring and fall, two single-zone units are often the better design, and we quote it both ways so you can choose.
Why is my indoor head dripping?
Almost always a condensate problem, not a refrigerant one: a line blocked with algae or dust, a line that lost its pitch, or a lift pump that stopped. We clear or re-pitch the line and replace the pump if needed. If the head also blows warm in cooling mode, the coil may be icing from low charge, which we check at the same visit.
Should we put a mini-split in a backyard ADU for a tenant?
For most ADUs, yes. A single cold-climate head on its own circuit heats and cools a small unit efficiently, gives the tenant their own controls and avoids running duct across the yard. We size it to the ADU's insulation and windows at the site visit, and the quote covers the circuit, the line set and the permit.
