Newman Lake · dryer repair for year-round cabins
Newman Lake dryer repair for cabins that stopped closing for winter
Beach towels in July, a whole family's laundry in January. Newman Lake cabins that now stay open all year ask far more of their dryers, in winters colder than Spokane's. We test the machine, follow the vent to its cap and quote in writing.
- Thirty-five minutes
- Out Trent to Starr Road, last stop on the east route
- Saturdays too
- Lake-only owners can book Saturday at the regular price
- Rigid duct
- Crushed foil flex replaced, caps moved out of the wind

Lake wind does most of the damage. A cabin laundry closet usually vents through a crawlspace or straight out the rim joist on the water side of the house, and every storm off the lake piles snow against that cap. With the air blocked, the element runs up against its high limit again and again until the thermal fuse or the element itself quits. Behind many of these machines sits a foil flex duct crushed flat when a bigger dryer was squeezed into a closet built for a smaller one. The result is the two-cycle dryer we hear about from the lake every winter, and the fix is usually smaller than owners fear, with the vent and the part done on one visit.
We check the air path before the appliance. Exhaust airflow and temperature are read at the vent, the run is followed out to the cap, and the cap is inspected for ice, lint and now and then a bird nest. With the meter we read element resistance and the continuity of the thermal fuse and high-limit, or on a gas unit the igniter, flame sensor and the pair of valve coils. Belt, idler and rollers come next, and the drum is turned by hand so worn bearings can be heard. Only a board that fails on the meter gets replaced. That full workup is the $99 diagnostic, already included in the written repair price, and an ordered part never adds a second trip fee for the long drive back.
Newman Lake dryer symptoms and repairs
| What you notice | What it usually is | What we do |
|---|---|---|
| Drum spins, air stays cold | Burned-out element or open fuse; on gas, a weak igniter or coil | Failed part replaced, exhaust heat and airflow logged |
| Two cycles since the cold set in | Cap on the windward side packed with snow and lint | Run cleared, cap opened, moisture sensor checked |
| Lint on the floor behind the dryer | Foil flex duct crushed against the wall | Rigid duct fitted, airflow verified; urgent if it smells hot |
| Cabin breaker trips | A dryer circuit added long after the cabin was built, or a dryer fault | Dryer and receptacle tested by the same technician |
| Light squeak, now a rumble | Worn drum bearings, glides or rollers | Drum lifted out, bearings and rollers renewed, belt checked |
| First load of the season will not dry | Nest or debris in the cap after months unused | Cap and run cleared, damper checked, airflow measured |
The east shore, Starr Road and the summer places
From our shop it is thirty-five minutes to the lake: out Trent Avenue to Starr Road, or up from the Barker exit, then along Newman Lake Drive toward Moab and the Hauser side. That makes it the last stop on our east route, which runs with Otis Orchards and the east Valley a couple of times a week, Saturdays among them. The shoreline holds three kinds of houses. Cabins from the 1950s and 1960s have been insulated, extended and turned into full-time homes; newer houses climb Starr Road and the hillsides above the water; and some places still open only for the summer, which brings its own dryer habits.
Gas mains never reached most of the shore, so the majority of lake dryers are electric, and elements and fuses lead our list. Older cabins often have modest electrical service and a dryer circuit added long after the building, so a dryer that keeps tripping its breaker gets the circuit checked by the same technician during the diagnostic. The older machines that came with the cabin bring rollers, idlers and bearings. In the summer-only places, a dryer that sat unused for months can start the season with a nest in the cap, which is why the first slow load of June deserves a look. Whirlpool, Maytag, Kenmore, GE, LG, Samsung, Electrolux and Speed Queen are all regular work.
When a cap keeps icing over, moving it is often the lasting fix. If the run can be shortened or the termination turned away from the lake wind, we replace the old run with rigid metal duct and a hood that closes, and the written quote lists exactly what that involves. Owners who are only at the lake on Saturdays can book a Saturday window and leave directions to the machine; plenty of our lake dryer calls happen that way, and a texted photo of the model tag beforehand helps us bring the right parts.

Newman Lake dryer repair, typical costs
An electric element at the lake starts at $175, and a thermal fuse or high-limit thermostat from $125. Clearing a crawlspace run and opening the cap begins at $100. Those are Spokane-area starting prices meant for planning, not a quote; rerouting a vent is priced as a separate line in the written estimate after the diagnostic. Whatever the job, the $99 is already inside the written number, the thirty-five-minute drive adds no distance surcharge, and payment by card, cash or check is due when the work is complete.

Questions we hear
Can you fix a dryer at Newman Lake on a Saturday?
Yes. Saturday is a normal working day for our crew, and there is no Saturday surcharge. If you only get to the lake on Saturdays, book that window and leave directions to the machine; a good share of our Newman Lake dryer calls are arranged that way. Pricing and warranty match any weekday visit.
Our dryer takes two cycles every winter. The machine or the vent?
Most likely the vent. Caps on lake houses often face the wind, so snow and lint pile up at the exit and airflow falls until the element is cycling on its limit. We clear the run, open up the cap and then test the element and moisture sensor, since a dryer starved for a season has often damaged one of them.
Is a no-heat dryer worth repairing at the lake?
In most cases, yes. A cold dryer usually needs one predictable part, an element, a fuse or a high-limit thermostat, and those travel with us, so the long drive rarely turns into a second one. The written number comes before any work with the $99 diagnostic inside it, and the finished repair has a written warranty.
The dryer trips the breaker in our cabin. Is it the dryer or the wiring?
Call us and leave the breaker off after a second trip. One visit tests the dryer's heating circuit along with the cabin's breaker and receptacle, so you learn whether the fault is in the machine or in the cabin's wiring. Older Newman Lake cabins often have a dryer circuit added long after the building, and we tell you plainly what we find and what it needs.
Can the vent be moved so the cap stops icing over?
Often. If the run can be shortened or the cap turned away from the wind off the lake, we rebuild it in rigid duct with a proper hood and describe the work in the written quote. A shorter, straighter run also trims drying time all year, not only in January.
