Mead refrigerators & freezers
Mead refrigerator and freezer repair before hunting season thaws
October in Mead: the chest freezer holds a hunting season, the garage refrigerator is stocked for the holidays, and one of them starts humming, clicking and warming. Those calls move to the front of our north route.
- Fifteen minutes north
- Up US-2 from the shop, on a route we run several days a week.
- Well-water ice makers
- Scaled inlet valves and hollow cubes are routine Mead calls.
- No acreage surcharge
- Peone Prairie and Mt. Spokane Park Drive share the Spokane price card.

Mead households keep more cold storage than most. The acreage homes out past Peone Prairie and along Mt. Spokane Park Drive often run a kitchen refrigerator, a second one in the garage, and a chest freezer or two holding a fall's worth of game and a summer's worth of Green Bluff fruit. When one of those boxes fails, the loss is measured in more than a carton of milk, which is why a warm freezer in Mead is treated as a same-day call, Monday through Saturday. Tell us what is inside when you call; a freezer full of meat moves faster than a drinks fridge.
The diagnosis separates airflow and defrost faults from sealed-system faults before anyone mentions a price. Our technician checks the condenser and compressor by touch and sound, reads the frost on the evaporator, meters the defrost heater, thermostat and timer or board, measures compressor amperage and tests the start relay and overload. Gaskets get a flashlight. Only if all of that passes do gauges go on, and because our technicians hold the EPA 608 Universal card, a compressor, filter drier or leak is handled by the same crew. Upright freezers get the same defrost-circuit checks as a refrigerator, while manual-defrost chest models skip that step and go straight to the relay, thermostat and gasket; plenty of them are saved by one of those three.
Mead refrigerator and freezer troubleshooting
| What you notice | What it usually is | What we do |
|---|---|---|
| Top layer in the chest freezer going soft | A lid gasket that no longer seals, a failed start relay, or a tired compressor | Gasket and relay replaced; a plain-language verdict on the sealed system |
| Garage refrigerator warm in midwinter | A thermostat satisfied by the cold garage, or a defrost fault | Thermostat or defrost part replaced, garage-kit options explained |
| Hollow cubes, then no ice at all | Inlet valve narrowed by well-water scale | Valve replaced, filter changed, fill line checked for freezing |
| Fresh food warm, freezer firm | Frost choking the coil after a defrost heater or thermostat failure, or a quiet evaporator fan | Defrost part or fan replaced, air moving again |
| Both sides warming in August | Condenser fan, dusty coils, or start components | Coils cleaned, fan or relay replaced |
| Codes after the well pump kicks on | Control board hit by a spike on a long rural service run | Board replaced, every mode tested, temperatures logged |
Cold storage on Mead acreage
Around Farwell and Market Street, the 1970s to 1990s houses also park extra units in the garage, and a Mead garage can top 100 degrees in August and fall well below freezing in January. That range is hard on the thermostats and start components in budget refrigerators and freezers. For garage units we tell you plainly whether the model is rated for a cold garage and what a garage kit does; for chest freezers we tell you when a compressor would cost more than it is worth against a new box. Whirlpool, GE, Frigidaire, LG, Kenmore and Maytag make up most of the kitchen work, with Sub-Zero, Thermador and Viking built-ins in some of the newer homes.
Two things fail here more often than elsewhere on our map. The first is the ice maker. Well water scales the inlet valve faster in Mead than anywhere we work, so hollow cubes and a silent ice maker are everyday calls; we replace the valve, change the filter and tell you which other valves in the house the water will reach next. The second is the electrical supply on acreage: long service runs, a well pump starting and stopping, and the occasional spike that kills a control board while the rest of the refrigerator is fine. If the well pump and the freezer share a circuit or sit close together on the panel, we point that out. After a board replacement we test every mode and log temperatures for hours before leaving.
From our shop it is about fifteen minutes up US-2, and we usually pair Mead with Colbert and Deer Park, so a van is in the area several days a week. The condenser coil is cleaned on every visit, and every completed repair leaves with a written warranty. Freezers in outbuildings get the same attention as kitchen units, and the gasket on a chest freezer lid gets a close look, since a lid that does not seal turns the whole box into a block of frost.

What Mead refrigerator repairs typically run
The two Mead regulars have predictable starting prices: a water inlet valve from $125, and a start relay and overload on a chest freezer or garage unit from $125. Sealed-system work, a compressor or a leak with a full evacuation and recharge, starts at $700. These describe where Spokane-area customers' bills start; they are not a quote. Your number comes in writing after the diagnostic, with the $99 already included. On a small bargain freezer, that sealed-system figure is usually the point where we suggest a new box instead.
| Repair | Price |

| Refrigerator water inlet valve | from $125 |
| Refrigerator start relay / overload | from $125 |

Questions we hear
The garage freezer is thawing. How soon can you get to Mead?
Mead is about fifteen minutes up US-2, and thawing freezers go to the head of the queue, so a morning call normally means a visit the same day. Keep the lid down; a packed chest freezer stays frozen for a day or longer. Leave it plugged in unless it is tripping the breaker, and tell us roughly what is inside.
Why does my garage refrigerator stop cooling in winter?
Plenty of refrigerators have only one thermostat, and it sits in the fresh-food section. Once the garage drops toward freezing, that section already feels cold, the compressor stays off, and the freezer warms up. It is a limit of the design, not a broken part, and a garage kit or a model rated for unheated spaces deals with it. If something else is wrong, the meter shows it.
Can you fix an ice maker running on well water?
Yes, and in Mead it is one of the most common calls. Scale narrows the inlet valve until the cubes come out hollow, then stop. We replace the valve, change the filter and check the fill line for freezing. Text a photo of the model tag and we will bring the matching valve.
Is a chest freezer worth the repair?
Most of the time. A relay, a thermostat or a gasket costs little next to a freezer full of elk and fruit, and a well-built chest freezer can run for many more years afterward. When the compressor has failed on a small bargain model, we say so at the diagnostic and you can stop at $99.
Is there a distance charge past Peone Prairie?
None. Every address in Mead, Farwell Road to Mt. Spokane Park Drive, uses the same price card as Spokane. The $99 diagnostic covers the trip and sits inside any repair price you approve, and Saturdays and ordered parts add nothing extra to the bill, so the acreage costs the same as a city lot.
Call, text or book
Online booking brings up to $22 off an appliance repair booked online, though a phone call is fine when you want to tell us what is at stake. The $99 diagnostic is folded into the written repair price, and a freezer full of meat gets the earliest window we have.
